DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21210-23 is a shock absorber spring rated at 32 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Free length 220 mm
  • Öhlins part number 21210-23
  • Measured spring rate 32 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 110 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated chrome

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Size and Rate

At 220 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 32 N/mm

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Installation

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
