DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06510-28 is a shock absorber spring rated at 28 N/mm, 300 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Free length 300 mm
- 175 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Öhlins part number 06510-28
- Measured spring rate 28 N/mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.
The Numbers That Matter
The 57 mm bore and 300 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 28 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 28 N/mm
This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.
Fitting
Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
