DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01104-93 is a shock absorber spring rated at 270 N/mm, 130 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01104-93
  • 48 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 270 N/mm
  • Free length 130 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 130 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 270 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
