DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 60480-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 18-27 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Powder-coated black
- Progressively wound
- 130 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Free length 230 mm
- Öhlins part number 60480-03
- Measured spring rate 18-27 N/mm (progressive)
How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.
Size and Rate
The 46 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 18-27 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Rate and the Linkage
Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
Fitting
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
