DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00480-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 18-27 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00480-13
  • Measured spring rate 18-27 N/mm (progressive)
  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Dimensions

At 230 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
