DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01099-69 is a shock absorber spring rated at 170 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 170 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 01099-69
  • Free length 220 mm
  • 87 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 220 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 170 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Installation

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
