DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66395-01 is a shock absorber spring rated at 16-28 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 66395-01
  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 150 mm
  • Measured spring rate 16-28 N/mm (progressive)

How Öhlins Makes Them

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

Dimensions

The 46 mm bore and 150 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 16-28 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Rate and the Linkage

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

Fitting

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
