DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01099-59 is a shock absorber spring rated at 150 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 91 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 01099-59
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 150 N/mm
- Free length 220 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.
Size and Rate
Free length 220 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 150 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Where This Rate Belongs
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.
What Fitting Involves
The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
