DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01095-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • 88 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01095-49

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 180 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 130 N/mm

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
