DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01101-49 is a shock absorber spring rated at 130 N/mm, 120 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01101-49
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 120 mm
  • 57 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 130 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

Dimensions

The 57 mm bore and 120 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 130 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.

What Fitting Involves

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
