DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60293-44 is a shock absorber spring rated at 120 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 60293-44
  • Free length 190 mm
  • 84 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 120 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Size and Rate

Free length 190 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 120 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 120 N/mm

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
