DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61091-41 is a shock absorber spring rated at 115 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 160 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 115 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 61091-41

Why the Rate Holds

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

At 160 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Choosing 115 N/mm

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
