DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01096-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- 87 mm of usable stroke
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 105 N/mm
- Free length 190 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Öhlins part number 01096-36
Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 190 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 105 N/mm.
What This Rate Does
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.
Applications
This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.
Installation
Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
