Function
At 8 mm, 20 mm, 0.10 mm it fits one position only; the next size up carries a different number. Outer diameter sets the lever the oil works against; thickness sets how hard it resists. Face flatness matters as much as thickness — a shim that does not seal against its neighbour leaks damping. Revalving means changing the stack, not the piston — that is why shims are sold singly.

Getting the Number Right
The reliable route is the exploded drawing: find the position, read the number, order it — 00184-20 in this case. Check inner diameter 8 mm, outer diameter 20 mm, thickness 0.10 mm against what you have removed; a close size is not the same part. A coned or marked shim is finished — it no longer seals against its neighbour. A shim is a thin, ground steel washer, and the stack of them is what generates damping.
Fitting and Setup Service
A damper rebuild is workshop work: it needs the unit dismantled, the shim stack rebuilt in the correct order and the gas charge reset. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and do exactly that in house — send us the unit or ask us to fit the part with your order.
