DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 04060-31 is a pair of fork springs rated at 30 N/mm, 60 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated black
  • Free length 60 mm
  • Measured spring rate 30 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Öhlins part number 04060-31

How Öhlins Makes Them

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 60 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Heavy riders in full kit, or machines carrying substantial load, are the other case. This is the stiff end of Öhlins' catalogue, chosen when fork dive rather than grip is the limiting factor. A rate this high is track territory or for a heavy rider: it stops the fork collapsing under sustained heavy braking. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
