What It Is
At 46 mm, 172.5 mm it fits one position only; the next size up carries a different number. A tube that has been bottomed hard often shows a ring mark; that is a reason to replace it. The cylinder tube is the working bore: the piston runs inside it and every damping force is reacted by its wall. Öhlins turns and hones each tube to a defined roundness, because an out-of-round bore leaks past the piston.

Bore finish decides how well the piston band seals; a scored tube leaks damping past the piston. Aluminium tubes are hard-anodised in the bore so the piston band has a hard surface to run against.
