The Last Registered R6
Euro 5 ended road sales in 2021, which makes the 2017 to 2022 machines the final R6s that can legally carry a number plate in Europe. Owners have noticed, and the bikes are being kept and maintained rather than traded on.
R1 Bodywork, Supersport Engine
Yamaha gave this generation the previous R1's aerodynamics and a magnesium subframe, along with 43 mm KYB forks and a ride-by-wire throttle. The engine was largely carried over, and the chassis is what people talk about.
What the Left Cluster Carries
Indicators, horn, beam and the navigation of the instrument panel, plus the selection of three power modes and six levels of traction control. Ride-by-wire brought all of that to a bike that previously had none of it.
Small Buttons on Clip-Ons
The controls sit close together on a bar that is already low and forward. Operating them in racing gloves at pace relies on the physical step between one and the next, because nobody is looking at the handlebar.
Water Runs Down the Bar
The fairing sends air over the rider rather than around the hands. In heavy rain the clip-on channels water directly to the switch, which is why sealed elements and a housing with no joint matter here.
Three Anodised Finishes
Black, blue and titanium. Blue continues Yamaha's racing colours where the fairing already carries them; the others keep a modified cockpit coherent.
Milled From Solid
One block of Ergal 7075 with no clipped joint. The buttons that straddle the seam of a moulded assembly lose their definition first, and there is no seam in this one.
