DescriptionThe whole story▼

An old KTM 125 EXC is one of the more rewarding enduro bikes to bring back to life: light, simple and still fun on a trail. Once the engine is sorted, the rolling chassis deserves the same care, and the rear brake is part of it. For the back wheel, Accossato offers the DK018, a fixed rear disc it lists for the 125 EXC from 1990 to 2017. It comes from the company's off-road range, is made in one piece of steel and is 4 mm thick when new.

Key Features

  • Rear disc for the KTM 125 EXC, 1990 to 2017
  • Fixed off-road disc in one piece
  • Steel-made, per the supplier
  • 220 mm outside diameter, 110 mm inside diameter, 4 mm thick
  • Interchangeable with the original equipment rear disc
  • Minimum thickness printed on the disc
  • No German ABE; for off-road and competition use

Construction and Material Quality

Apart from the pad track itself, there is nothing on the DK018 that needs looking after. Accossato builds it as a fixed disc, the friction ring and the mounting flange formed as one steel part with an outer diameter of 220 mm and a 110 mm centre. That suits a rear wheel, which spends its life in the dirt thrown up by its own tyre. In Accossato's own account, its disc know-how grew out of Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3, and it names the accuracy of its design and the choice of materials as the reasons its discs work as they do.

Bringing an Old EXC Back

A restoration usually starts with the engine and ends with the details, and the rear end of a 125 EXC is full of details worth doing properly. With the wheel out, turn the bearings by hand: they should run smoothly, without rough spots or play. Look at the spokes and rim, at sprocket and chain, and at the pivot of the brake pedal, which on older bikes is often dry and stiff. Then the brake itself. Clean around the caliper pistons before pushing them back, fit new pads and inspect the hose for cracks and chafing.

The disc comes late in that list but should not be skipped. An original disc on a bike from the 1990s may still look usable, yet thickness counts, not appearance. Compare it with the wear limit in the KTM manual; if it is close, a new DK018 gives you a rear brake you know. Remember that the fluid level in the reservoir rises when the pistons are pushed back, and pump the pedal several times until it is firm before the first ride.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK018 for the KTM 125 EXC from 1990 to 2017. The same span applies to the DK017 front disc, while the DK259, a second front option, is listed from 1994 to 2017. Described as a direct replacement for the original rear disc, the DK018 goes onto the existing hub of the 125 EXC; tighten the bolts to the torque in the KTM manual and use thread lock where the manual asks for it.

Road Approval

A registered 125 EXC may be ridden on the road, but this disc has no German ABE and no type approval behind it. We supply it for off-road riding and competition.

Scope of Delivery

The delivery is one DK018 rear disc on its own.
