DescriptionThe whole story▼
Every Skwal i3 starts from the same premise: an integrated LED brake light system, front and rear, that reacts to the helmet's own deceleration rather than the bike's — the world's first production helmet built this way, Shark says. Ready is how that premise looks in a gloss black shell with the same graphic in a cobalt-blue finish.
How the brake light actually works
Riders used to bike-mounted brake lights sometimes assume this one must be wired in the same way. It isn't. A three-axis accelerometer inside the Skwal i3 reads the helmet's own deceleration and fires red rear LEDs at three flashes a second under normal braking, five under hard braking, while separate white LEDs at the front run all the time for forward visibility — no cable to the bike, no phone, no setup.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Lexan polycarbonate on the outside, multi-density EPS on the inside, a micrometric ratchet buckle at the chin, and a multichannel ventilation path moving air from four front intakes to two rear extractors — that's the Skwal i3's construction beneath the graphics, independently confirmed rather than taken solely from the marketing copy.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
1,570 g for the smallest shell is Shark's own number for the Skwal i3, and an independent review quotes the same figure, which at least means it isn't a marketing outlier — though it also doesn't confirm what a size L or XL actually weighs on the larger shell. Most road-legal full-face helmets in our own catalogue weigh somewhere between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g, and this figure sits toward the centre of that range.
Visor and Pinlock
The vortex generator moulded into the Skwal i3's visor is there to manage airflow across the lens surface, one part of a VZ400-family spec shared with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup: Optical Class 1, a pre-fitted Pinlock 70 with adjustable tension, a 3 mm-to-2.2 mm variable thickness, an anti-scratch coating, and tool-free removal via a central grip with central locking. Photochromic tinting is off the table from the factory — Shark's IRID list covers only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Shark thought about three specific daily annoyances when building the Skwal i3: low sun (answered with a crown-slider internal sun visor), glasses (answered with a redesigned interior that avoids pressure points), and intercoms (answered with a shell ready for Sharktooth or SENA without modification). A 5-year warranty covers the result.
Wind noise, honestly
Screen height changes what any rider hears more than a spec sheet can predict, which is one reason we're not quoting a decibel figure for the Skwal i3 — none exists in our sources anyway. What we can report: an independent long-term review found noise levels not unduly loud, with no localised source, crediting the substantial neck roll and generous chin curtain specifically.
Ready, blue
Blue and gloss suit each other on this decor: the colour reads clean and saturated under direct light rather than muted the way the same graphic looks in matte on a different colourway in this range. Underneath, it's a gloss black shell with the same graphic in a cobalt-blue finish. The gloss coat keeps the graphic's edges crisp rather than softening them the way a matte print can, which matters on a design built around one bold sweep of colour rather than a busy pattern.
For daily riders sharing the road with distracted drivers, this decor's brake light is doing continuous, quiet work — more relevant to a city commute than to an open road with few other vehicles nearby. It's a feature that pays off in small, unremarkable moments rather than a dramatic one-off save, which is exactly how good safety equipment is supposed to work.
Fit across the size run
Six sizes, XS through XXL, make up the Skwal i3 range. A confirmed shell-mould count for this specific model wasn't in any source we trust, so none appears here — the size chart is the practical way to find the right fit.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
The full picture, not just this one decor: Ridill 2 runs from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 from €219.99, and the non-LED Skwal Cup from €269.99 to €339.99. This helmet: €349.99. The Skwal i Cup, sharing the LED system, opens at €329.99.
Spare parts, later
Spare parts are one area where being part of a five-helmet family pays off: the Skwal i3's VZ400 visor and Pinlock 70 insert carry the same part numbers as the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, keeping replacement stock wide rather than narrow.
What this helmet does not have
Transparency cuts both ways — praise the LED system, then say plainly what else the Skwal i3 doesn't have: a SHARP rating of its own (the UK programme's Shark entries are the older Skwal and Skwal 2, not this model), an FIM suffix on its ECE 22.06 certificate, a MIPS liner, an electronic quick-release system, tear-off posts, or IRID photochromic compatibility. Its buckle is a micrometric ratchet, not a double-D ring. And its brake light's legal status on German public roads remains an open question: Shark's manual asks riders to check their own country's rules, offers no E-mark for the light, and no source found here confirms compliance or non-compliance.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
Twelve hours per charge, three hours to get there, and a sealed battery that isn't meant to be opened — that's the LED system's power budget, delivered over USB-C through a cable kept inside the neck protection. It manages itself the rest of the time: sleep after 60 seconds without movement, shutdown after 72 hours of inactivity. Right at the bottom of the charge, Shark's manual says the system will still switch on and then cut out again almost immediately, needing a recharge before it does anything more.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
Behind the 2206 stamped on a Skwal i3's certificate sits eighteen separate impact points, tested at multiple speeds rather than one, including an oblique-impact strike against an abrasive anvil that twists the shell instead of dropping it straight, plus a Brain Injury Criterion scoring rotational forces the previous 22.05 standard didn't measure at all. The helmet wears its visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit throughout testing. Mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024, and no FIM suffix here — this is a road certification, not a race one.
What comes with the helmet
The Skwal i3, its Pinlock 70 already fitted, the LED system's USB-C cable stored in the neck protection, and Shark's own paperwork — warranty terms and the LED manual — round out the box.
