DescriptionThe whole story▼

The pitch is simple and the engineering behind it isn't: LED brake lights built into the shell, front and rear, lighting up off the helmet's own motion sensor rather than a connection to the bike. Shark calls the Skwal i3 the world's first production helmet with this system. Here it comes as Hellcat Matte, in a matte black shell with a chrome-effect purple visor and matching pink-purple graphic streaks along the side.

How the brake light actually works

No connection to the bike, no app, no pairing: the Skwal i3's brake light runs entirely on its own three-axis accelerometer, sensing deceleration directly off the helmet rather than off a signal from the motorcycle. Rear LEDs glow red and flash three times a second under normal braking, five times a second under hard braking, while a separate set of white LEDs up front adds a second point of visibility that has nothing to do with braking at all.

Wind noise, honestly

There's a temptation to quote a decibel number because it sounds precise, and we're resisting it — no such figure exists for the Skwal i3 in any source we trust. Instead: an independent long-term review found noise levels weren't unduly loud and identified no single localised wind-noise source, crediting a substantial neck roll at both sides and a generous chin curtain for closing off the usual draught points.

The Hellcat Matte decor, up close

a matte black shell with a chrome-effect purple visor and matching pink-purple graphic streaks along the side is the short version. The longer version: a matte finish that trades outright shine for a surface that hides small scuffs better than gloss would.

This isn't primarily a trackday helmet, and the decor doesn't pretend otherwise — it's built for someone riding through traffic often enough that a following driver's attention is a real, recurring concern, not an occasional one.

Fit across the size run

XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL — six sizes altogether. We're not stating a shell-mould count here because we couldn't confirm one specifically for the Skwal i3, and an unconfirmed number helps no one; the size chart is what actually determines fit.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

Shark's road-helmet pricing isn't arbitrary, and seeing the whole ladder explains this decor's €379.99: Ridill 2 opens it from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 follows from €219.99, the Skwal Cup runs €269.99–€339.99 with no LED fitted, and the Skwal i Cup — the only other LED-equipped model — starts from €329.99.

Spare parts, later

Later down the line, when the visor's had enough scratches, the fix is a part number, not a new helmet: the Skwal i3 uses the VZ400 family, shared with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, right down to the Pinlock 70 insert carrying the same shared reference.

What this helmet does not have

What's absent matters as much as what's included. No SHARP rating specific to this model — the programme's tested Skwal and Skwal 2, not the i3. ECE 22.06 only, no FIM suffix. No MIPS, no EQRS, no tear-off posts on the visor, no IRID photochromic option. A micrometric buckle, not a double-D ring. And the question with no confirmed answer: can the LED brake light legally be used on German public roads? Shark doesn't claim it can — the manual's own wording tells riders to check their own country's legislation, no E-mark accompanies the light system, and no source found here, manufacturer or press, states a clear position either way. We're reporting that as unclear, not as either a green light or a ban, because that's what the evidence actually supports.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

A weekly top-up is roughly what the numbers suggest: about twelve hours of flashing-light runtime from a three-hour USB-C charge, through a cable that stores inside the neck protection rather than dangling. The battery itself is sealed and non-replaceable. Automatic power management does the rest — standby after 60 seconds without movement, full shutdown after 72 hours of inactivity — and Shark's manual is upfront that a nearly empty battery will still let the helmet switch on, only to turn off again almost immediately, at which point it's back on the charger.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

Compare the numbers directly: 22.05 tested five points on the shell, at one impact speed, with a straight drop only. 22.06 — the standard on every Skwal i3 — tests eighteen points, at several speeds, adds an oblique-impact hit against an abrasive anvil, and scores a Brain Injury Criterion for rotational forces that the old standard never measured. The helmet is tested complete with visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit. Mandatory in the EU since January 2024, and this helmet's certificate carries no FIM suffix — 2206 alone, meaning road approval rather than competition homologation.

Shell, closure and ventilation

Four intake vents at the front, two extractor vents at the rear — that's the ventilation layout an independent review counted on the Skwal i3, feeding into a multichannel path rather than a single tunnel. The shell itself is injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner that varies its firmness through the structure, and it closes with a micrometric buckle: a ratcheting strap rather than a double-D ring, tightening to an exact tension with one pull.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

Riders in the smaller sizes get closer to Shark's quoted 1,570 g for the Skwal i3 than riders in XL or XXL will, since the figure is specifically for the first, smallest shell — a detail an independent press review's matching number doesn't clear up, since it doesn't specify size either. Within our own range of road-legal full-face helmets, most weigh between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g, and this figure lands comfortably inside that band rather than at either edge.

Visor and Pinlock

Not every visor family in Shark's range gets the same treatment, and VZ400 — the one fitted to the Skwal i3, alongside the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — comes with Optical Class 1 certification, a pre-fitted, tension-adjustable Pinlock 70, a moulded vortex generator, and a lens that varies from 3 mm to 2.2 mm through its thickness. Anti-scratch coating and tool-free central-lock removal round it out. It's absent from the IRID photochromic list (Aeron GP, Aeron, Race R Pro only), so tinted lenses come from the aftermarket, not the factory.

Sun visor and everyday usability

Low sun on the ride home is what the crown-slider internal sun visor is for, dropping into place without pulling over. Add an interior redesigned to seat glasses without discomfort and a shell that's ready for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom without modification, and the Skwal i3 covers three common daily annoyances before you've even asked. Shark's 5-year warranty applies throughout.

Delivery contents

The helmet, its Pinlock 70 insert pre-installed, the LED system's USB-C charging cable stored in the neck protection rather than loose, and the manufacturer's documentation — 5-year warranty terms and the LED manual, where the legislation-check note is printed.
