DescriptionThe whole story▼

Most helmet safety talk is about impact. The Skwal i3 adds a second conversation entirely — being seen before the impact ever happens, through integrated LED brake lights front and rear that Shark calls a world first for a production helmet. Hellcat Matte is this system in a matte black shell with a chrome-effect red visor and red graphic streaks along the side.

How the brake light actually works

Shark's marketing line is 'the world's first helmet with integrated active brake lights,' and the engineering behind it is a three-axis accelerometer rather than any wiring back to the motorcycle. It reads the helmet's own deceleration and lights red LEDs at the rear at three flashes a second for a normal stop, five for a hard one; white LEDs at the front handle forward visibility on a separate circuit, with no Bluetooth or app involved anywhere in the loop.

Colour and coat: Hellcat Matte

Colour first — a matte black shell with a chrome-effect red visor and red graphic streaks along the side — then coat: matte, which on this range means a surface that's more forgiving of daily knocks than a gloss coat, at the cost of a duller reflection.

A rider who commutes through a city gets more genuine use from the LED brake light than one who mostly rides open country roads with long sightlines, and this decor is built with that rider in mind rather than for competition use.

Fit across the size run

Six sizes span the Skwal i3 range, from XS to XXL. Whether that's built on one shell or several isn't confirmed in any source we trust for this specific model, so we're leaving the number out rather than assuming it carries over from a related helmet.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

This decor doesn't exist in a vacuum. Shark's road range runs Ridill 2 (€189.99+), D-Skwal 3 (€219.99+), Skwal Cup (€269.99–€339.99, no LED), this helmet at €379.99, and the Skwal i Cup (€329.99+), the other model carrying the same LED brake-light system.

Spare parts, later

Shared parts mean shared availability, and the Skwal i3's visor is a good example — VZ400, the same family used on the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, with the Pinlock 70 insert carrying a common part number across all five. Replacing a scratched lens doesn't mean hunting for a rare part.

What this helmet does not have

A short, deliberately unglamorous list: no SHARP star rating for the Skwal i3 (only the older Skwal and Skwal 2 have one), ECE 22.06 with no FIM suffix, no MIPS liner, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, and no compatibility with Shark's IRID photochromic tint. The buckle is a micrometric ratchet rather than a double-D ring. The one item that deserves more than a line: whether the integrated LED brake light may legally be run on German public roads. Shark's own manual stops short of claiming it can, instead directing riders to check their own country's legislation, and gives no E-mark or homologation number for the light. No independent source resolves it either. We're leaving it exactly where the evidence leaves it — open.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

Charging is USB-C, the cable lives inside the neck protection so it doesn't flap around, and a full charge takes about three hours for roughly twelve hours of use in flashing-light mode. The sealed battery isn't user-replaceable. Two automatic behaviours protect it: standby after 60 seconds of no movement, and a full shutdown after 72 hours of inactivity. Near empty, the manual says the helmet can still be switched on but will shut off again almost immediately — the fix is simply to recharge it.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

A helmet certified to ECE 22.06, as every Skwal i3 is, has been struck at eighteen points rather than the old standard's five, at a range of speeds rather than a single one, and subjected to an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that twists the shell instead of dropping it straight down. It's also scored for a Brain Injury Criterion covering rotational forces, something 22.05 never measured, and tested with its visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit in place. Required for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024. No FIM suffix on the certificate: 2206 only.

Shell, closure and ventilation

Shell material first: Lexan polycarbonate, injection-moulded, with a multi-density EPS liner inside that grades its stiffness rather than using one foam throughout. Closure next: a micrometric buckle, a toothed ratchet strap that clicks to a precise tension rather than a double-D ring's fixed holes — quick to adjust, even in gloves. Ventilation last: a multichannel layout of front intakes and rear extractors, counted independently at four and two.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

Neck fatigue builds slowly, which is exactly why weight matters more on hour four of a ride than in the first five minutes trying a helmet on in a shop. Shark's 1,570 g figure for the Skwal i3 covers the smallest shell size; an independent review cites the same number without specifying which size, so at minimum the two sources corroborate each other on the figure itself. It sits inside the roughly 1,250–1,800 g range that most road-legal full-face helmets in our catalogue occupy.

Visor and Pinlock

Shark doesn't rate every visor the same way, but the VZ400 family — fitted here and shared with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — carries Optical Class 1 and ships with a Pinlock 70 already installed, tension adjustable. A vortex generator is moulded into the shape, the lens itself varies from 3 mm to 2.2 mm in thickness, the coating resists scratches, and a central grip with central locking releases it without tools. It's not on the IRID photochromic list, which covers only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.

Sun visor and everyday usability

Intercom-ready doesn't always mean drama-free installation, but on the Skwal i3 it does — the shell takes a Sharktooth or SENA unit with no modification. The rest of the daily-use list: a crown-slider internal sun visor for low sun, an interior reshaped to keep glasses comfortable, and a 5-year manufacturer warranty over everything.

Wind noise, honestly

A generous chin curtain and a substantial neck roll on both sides are doing real work here, sealing off the base of the shell where most helmets let noise and cold air through — an independent long-term review of the Skwal i3 credits exactly these two features for keeping wind noise down, without reporting a single localised source anywhere on the shell. No decibel figure exists, so none is quoted.

In the box

Everything needed for the first ride is already fitted: Pinlock 70 in the visor, USB-C cable in the neck protection, and Shark's paperwork covering the 5-year warranty and the light system's instructions, nothing extra to source separately.
