DescriptionThe whole story

Denim blue is the deepest colour in the plain range and the one that behaves most like a neutral. It is dark enough to hide a city's worth of road film and coloured enough not to read as another black helmet.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

🔵 One sentence that should not be buried: the chin and jaw region takes a substantial share of impacts in real motorcycle crashes, and this helmet has nothing over it.

That is not a criticism of the Y.10, which is a well-equipped example of what it is. It is the single fact that should decide whether an open-face suits the riding you do.

About the denim blue finish

Deep blue is consistently under-chosen on helmets and it is the most practical coloured finish available. Fine road film reads as a grey haze against black and as an obvious film against pale colours; against denim blue it largely disappears, which on a helmet washed occasionally rather than religiously matters over the whole ownership period. It also works with almost any jacket, which on a helmet worn with ordinary clothing rather than a riding suit is a real consideration. 🔵 Conspicuity sits above the blacks and below the pale versions — worth a thought on a helmet used mainly in city traffic.

Polyfusion, two shells and three approvals

Full ECE 22-06 approval means the current schedule rather than the superseded 22.05 — impact at several energies and points, oblique impact, abrasion and retention strength, applied to the jet-helmet category.

🔵 Worth checking on any inexpensive open-face you compare this with; a good number are still sold against the older standard.

The sun visor, the peak — and the clear visor that is not there

The tint is light rather than dark, which is the right choice for a shield with no clear alternative behind it — it takes the edge off glare without becoming unusable as the light drops.

🔵 It is still a tint. For riding after dark, plan on clear glasses. The shield deploys from a tab on the lens edge and retracts fully out of view.

Airflow on an open-face

What ventilation actually manages is humidity rather than temperature — sweat that cannot evaporate stays in the padding and stays on you. On a jet the face opening handles most of that automatically.

The Y.10's own system works on the crown, and a two-stage top vent appears on some versions of the range.

Interior, glasses and the buckle

Comfort on an open-face is decided at the edge rather than in the padding. The rim runs across your cheekbones and around your jaw, in full view and in constant contact — a badly finished one is unbearable within twenty minutes.

🔵 On the Sunny and Midtown lines that edge is trimmed in camel; on the plain versions it is black.

Intercom — and the 45 mm limit

Speaker depth matters more than diameter for comfort. A 45 mm speaker that is 12 mm deep will press where a 45 mm one that is 8 mm deep will not — and on a helmet with a slim liner there is less padding to absorb the difference.

🔵 Check both dimensions against your system before buying.

1325 grams, and the rest of the honest list

Light helmets are usually light because something has been left out, and it is worth knowing what. Here it is the chin bar, the outer visor mechanism and the composite shell — not the approvals, the sun visor or the buckle.

🔵 1325 g ±50 is the result, on a helmet certified to the current ECE 22-06 standard.

Choosing the right size

Head circumference gets you to the right size; head shape decides whether it is comfortable. If a helmet presses at the temples but is loose front-to-back, it is the wrong shape rather than the wrong size, and no amount of padding fixes that.

🔵 Try the helmet on rather than ordering by measurement alone.

When something wears out

🔵 Replacement padding is also the right answer to a helmet that has become loose. Rather than living with one that moves on your head, fit fresh pads — they cost a fraction of a new helmet and restore the fit the liner has lost.

The peak and the drop-down shield are separately available as well.

Where it sits in Nexx's range

The most useful comparison is not against other Nexx helmets but against other 120-euro jets. At this price most supply a single shell size, no drop-down shield and no peak. The Y.10 supplies two shell sizes, a shield and a peak.

🔵 What it does not supply, and many rivals do, is a clear visor.

“A clean, understated jet with a proper drop-down sun visor and a wide adjustable shield, at 1,225 g. It has less presence than the Shoei J.O2 but costs a third as much and is easier to live with day to day.”
