DescriptionThe whole story▼
What is this helmet, really? Start with the light, because that's what sets it apart: active LED brake lights integrated into the shell, front and rear, reacting to the helmet's own deceleration rather than anything wired to the motorcycle. Shark calls it the world's first production helmet built this way. This particular decor, Speed-Fancy Matte, carries that system under a matte black shell cut through with a red diagonal racing stripe and a thin silver pinstripe underneath it.
How the brake light actually works
Ask how a helmet can have a brake light without wiring into the bike, and the answer is an accelerometer, not a cable. A three-axis sensor in the shell reads deceleration directly and fires the rear LEDs red — three flashes per second for a normal stop, five for a hard one — while small white LEDs at the front add visibility of their own. Nothing pairs to the motorcycle and nothing pairs to a phone.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Two building blocks make up the shell: an outer layer of Lexan polycarbonate, injection-moulded for impact resistance, and an inner multi-density EPS liner that grades its stiffness across the shape rather than using one foam throughout. The buckle is micrometric — a ratcheting strap that locks to an exact tension with a satisfying click, adjustable in fine steps rather than jumping between a couple of D-ring holes. Ventilation is multichannel: air enters through front intakes and leaves through rear extractors, four and two respectively by an independent count.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
Weight only tells half the story without knowing which size it's for, and Shark's 1,570 g figure for the Skwal i3 is specifically for the smallest shell — a press review independently reaching the same number doesn't settle whether it means the same thing for a size M or XL, so treat it as a floor rather than a promise for every size. What it does confirm is roughly where this helmet sits: inside the 1,250–1,800 g band that most road-legal full-face helmets in our range occupy, closer to the middle than either extreme.
Visor and Pinlock
Shark builds one visor family — VZ400 — for the entire Skwal i3, D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup range, and this helmet gets the same Optical Class 1 standard and pre-fitted Pinlock 70 as the rest of it. The lens varies from 3 mm thick at the edge to 2.2 mm through the field of view, uses a vortex generator moulded into its shape, and releases through a central grip with central locking, no tools needed. Tension is adjustable and the coating is anti-scratch. It's absent from the IRID photochromic list — Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro only — so tinted lenses aren't a factory option on this helmet.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Glasses-friendly interiors get mentioned on a lot of spec sheets without much detail behind them; on the Skwal i3, Shark specifically redesigned the padding so arms sit without pressure or discomfort. A crown-mounted slider drops the internal sun visor, the shell is pre-configured for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom, and Shark backs the whole helmet with a 5-year warranty.
Wind noise, honestly
A wind-tunnel-tested shell and a sealed base aren't the same as a quiet ride, and we're not going to quote a decibel figure that doesn't exist for the Skwal i3. What's verifiable is a long-term review's account: no part of the shell stood out as a localised noise source, and the substantial neck roll and generous chin curtain were specifically credited for keeping draughts, and the noise that comes with them, out.
What Speed-Fancy Matte actually looks like on the road
Described plainly: a matte black shell cut through with a red diagonal racing stripe and a thin silver pinstripe underneath it, finished matte, which scuffs less visibly but marks differently under certain cleaning products.
A helmet built around visibility makes the most sense for someone doing daily miles in traffic rather than occasional weekend rides, and this decor doesn't hide that priority behind the graphic — the LED system is doing real work every time a car behind slows to match your braking.
Fit across the size run
The size run spans XS to XXL across six sizes. How many physical shells that's built on isn't something Shark states for this specific helmet in the sources we trust, so we're not guessing at a number — the size chart is the reliable way to find your fit here.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Four other Shark road helmets sit around this one on price. Cheapest: Ridill 2, from €189.99. Next: D-Skwal 3, from €219.99. Then the Skwal Cup, €269.99 to €339.99 depending on decor, with no LED brake light fitted. This decor costs €379.99. Above it: the Skwal i Cup, from €329.99, the only other Shark road helmet with the same LED system.
Spare parts, later
Shark's own spare-parts numbering ties the Skwal i3's visor and Pinlock insert to four other helmets in the current range — D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — all sharing the VZ400 visor family and the same Pinlock 70. A scratched lens is a five-minute swap with a part Shark keeps in stock, not a reason to retire the helmet.
What this helmet does not have
This isn't the LED-lit demo unit at a dealership, so it's worth being direct about what's missing: no SHARP star rating (the programme has only tested the older Skwal and Skwal 2, never this model), no FIM suffix on the ECE 22.06 certificate, no MIPS liner, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic option, and a micrometric buckle instead of a double-D ring. The brake light's legal status on German roads is genuinely unresolved: Shark's manual tells riders to check their own country's legislation rather than claiming approval, there's no E-mark for the light anywhere in the documentation, and no source used here — manufacturer or press — settles the question either way. It would be dishonest to call it road-legal; it would also be dishonest to call it banned. It's unclear, and riders who want certainty should check with a TÜV or type-approval authority before relying on it in place of the motorcycle's own brake light.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
No spare batteries and no battery door — Shark sealed a non-replaceable cell into the Skwal i3 and charges it over USB-C via a cable that lives in the neck protection, roughly three hours for a full charge and about twelve hours of flashing-light use per charge. It sleeps automatically after 60 seconds without movement and shuts down entirely after 72 hours of inactivity. Right at empty, the manual says it will still power on but shut off again almost at once, meaning a recharge before the light does anything useful.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
What actually changed between ECE 22.05 and 22.06? Five impact points became eighteen. One impact speed became several. A straight drop test gained an oblique-impact companion against an abrasive anvil, loading the shell with twist and glance rather than a clean vertical hit. And for the first time, a Brain Injury Criterion scores rotational energy, not just the old linear deceleration figure. Every Skwal i3 is tested this way complete with visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit — mandatory in the EU since January 2024 — and its certificate reads 2206, with no FIM suffix.
Unboxing, briefly
Nothing extra to buy before the first ride: the helmet ships with its Pinlock 70 insert fitted, the USB-C charging cable for the brake light stored in the neck protection, and the manufacturer's documentation, including the 5-year warranty and the LED system's own instructions.
