DescriptionThe whole story▼

Strip away every other feature and the Skwal i3 is still worth discussing for one reason: integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, built into the shell and reading the helmet's own deceleration rather than the bike's wiring — the world's first production helmet to do it, according to Shark. This decor, Dark Shadow Matte, dresses that system in a solid matte black shell with a tonal-on-tonal graphic that only shows itself in raking light.

How the brake light actually works

The accelerometer is the whole trick. Mounted inside the shell, it measures deceleration directly, so the red rear LEDs know the difference between easing off the throttle and grabbing a fistful of front brake — three flashes a second for the former, five for the latter — without any wire running back to the bike's own brake light circuit or any Bluetooth pairing to set up before you ride.

Sun visor and everyday usability

A helmet that plans for glasses, sun and intercoms from the start saves three separate headaches later, and the Skwal i3 does: the interior is redesigned around glasses arms, an internal sun visor drops via a crown-mounted slider, and the shell is ready for a Sharktooth or SENA unit without modification. Five years of warranty backs the whole package.

Wind noise, honestly

The seal at the base of the shell does more for noise than most riders realise, and on the Skwal i3 that seal comes from a substantial neck roll on both sides plus a generous chin curtain — specifically credited by an independent long-term review for keeping noise levels down, with no single part of the helmet flagged as a localised source. No decibel figure exists for this helmet, and none will be invented here.

Reading the Dark Shadow Matte graphic

Up close, this decor is a solid matte black shell with a tonal-on-tonal graphic that only shows itself in raking light. From a distance, on a moving bike, the matte surface reads as a solid, understated colour block rather than catching light the way gloss does.

Daily riders in stop-start traffic get more out of the brake light than someone doing the occasional long weekend ride, simply because the light fires more often where it matters most — at junctions, in traffic, at the moments a driver behind is least likely to be paying full attention.

Fit across the size run

Sizing runs XS to XXL across six sizes. The number of physical shell moulds behind that range isn't something we can confirm for this specific helmet, so it's left out rather than guessed at — the size chart remains the accurate way to find the right fit.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

The ladder beneath this helmet, in order: Ridill 2 from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 from €219.99, Skwal Cup €269.99–€339.99 — none of the three with an LED brake light. This decor: €349.99. Above it, sharing the LED system: the Skwal i Cup, from €329.99.

Spare parts, later

Five helmets, one visor part number: the Skwal i3's VZ400 lens and its Pinlock 70 insert are the same parts fitted to the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, which means Shark's spares stock for this visor is deep rather than model-specific — a practical detail when a lens finally scratches through.

What this helmet does not have

Honesty about limitations belongs here, in its own section, not scattered through the marketing copy above. No SHARP star rating exists for the Skwal i3 — SHARP has rated the original Skwal and Skwal 2, both four stars, but never this model, and those stars don't carry over. ECE 22.06 with no FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release, no tear-off posts, no IRID compatibility, and a micrometric buckle instead of a double-D ring round out the technical gaps. The legal status of the brake light on German roads is unresolved in every source checked here: Shark's manual asks riders to check their own country's rules rather than confirming approval, no E-mark for the light appears in the documentation, and neither the manufacturer nor independent press states a clear yes or no. Until that changes, treat it as unclear rather than assuming Shark selling the helmet here settles the matter.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

USB-C, three hours, twelve hours of runtime — that's the whole power story for the Skwal i3's light system, run off a sealed battery you can't swap out yourself, with the charging cable stored in the neck protection rather than hanging loose. Sixty seconds without movement puts it to sleep automatically; 72 hours without any movement at all shuts it down completely. Let the charge run right out and the manual says it'll still switch on, just not for long — it turns off again almost immediately and needs a proper charge.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

Some riders assume a newer standard number means a marginally stricter version of the old test. ECE 22.06 isn't that. It strikes a helmet at eighteen points instead of five, at multiple impact speeds instead of one, and adds an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that twists the shell rather than dropping it flat. A Brain Injury Criterion now measures rotational energy alongside the older linear figure, and testing includes the visor, Pinlock and a mounted comms unit rather than a bare shell. It's been mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024, and the Skwal i3's certificate reads 2206 with no FIM suffix.

Shell, closure and ventilation

The buckle is worth calling out on its own: where some Shark road helmets use a double-D ring, the Skwal i3 uses a micrometric ratchet strap, clicking to a precise, repeatable tension and releasing in one motion, easier to fine-tune with gloves than threading a strap through two rings. The shell beneath it is Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner, and airflow runs on a multichannel system — front intakes, rear extractors, four and two respectively by independent count.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

The number that matters isn't how heavy the Skwal i3 feels in the showroom, it's how it feels four hours into a ride. Shark's figure is 1,570 g, quoted for the first, smallest shell size; an independent review reaches the same weight without confirming the size, so the two sources agree on the number even if the size reference stays open. Set against the roughly 1,250–1,800 g spread of road-legal full-face helmets in our own range, it sits toward the centre.

Visor and Pinlock

Central grip, central locking, no tools: that's how the visor comes off a Skwal i3, part of the VZ400 family shared across the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup ranges. It's Optical Class 1, ships with a Pinlock 70 already fitted and its tension adjustable, tapers from 3 mm to 2.2 mm through its field of view with a moulded vortex generator, and carries an anti-scratch coating. Photochromic tinting isn't a factory option — Shark's IRID list names only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.

In the box

One helmet, ready to wear: Pinlock 70 fitted to the visor from the factory, the USB-C charging cable for the brake light already stowed in the neck protection, and Shark's paperwork covering the 5-year warranty and the light system's own instructions.
