Die schmutzigste Luft, die eine GS je einatmet, erreicht sie, während sie sich kaum bewegt. Trailtempo auf trockener Piste, eine Reihe von Maschinen, die jeweils in der Staubfahne der vorausfahrenden fährt, ein Halt mit laufendem Motor, während alles, was auf dem Weg hinein aufgewirbelt wurde, noch in der Luft hängt – genau dann ist die Belastung eines Elements am größten. Und, das ist der nützliche Teil, genau dann verlangt der Motor weniger Luft als zu jedem anderen Zeitpunkt des Tages. Das Extremmedium gibt Durchsatz genau dort auf, wo Durchsatz am billigsten ist.

Zwei Kurven, die zufällig gegenläufig verlaufen
Der Luftbedarf steigt mit der Drehzahl; der Staub in der Luft steigt, wenn die Geschwindigkeit über Grund sinkt. Auf einer schnellen, befestigten Straße saugt der Motor kräftig durch vergleichsweise saubere Luft; auf einer Piste im ersten und zweiten Gang saugt er verhalten durch die schlechteste Luft der ganzen Fahrt. Eine Drosselung wird überall dort bezahlt, wo der Bedarf hoch ist, sodass ein für die zweite Situation gewähltes Medium ausgerechnet in der Situation, für die es gewählt wurde, am wenigsten kostet. Das lässt die Drosselung auf der schnellen Straße nach Hause nicht verschwinden, mit demselben Element im Kasten – es macht den Tausch aber zu einem günstig verteilten statt zu einem reinen Verlust.
Die Größe des Tauschgeschäfts
Es ist das größte Tauschgeschäft in der Baureihe und verdient eine genaue Benennung: 560 l/m²/sek gegenüber den 5.050 des Standardgewebes, also etwa ein Neuntel der Luft durch dieselbe Materialfläche, im Tausch für eine Reduktion von achtzig Mikron auf sieben. Feiner bedeutet strenger und nie einfach besser, und die beiden Werte bewegen sich immer gemeinsam in entgegengesetzte Richtungen. Auch das ist keine Leistungsfrage. Ein PM142T12 im Serien-Luftfilterkasten macht eine Standard-R-1250-GS nicht schneller, als sie war; der gesamte Gewinn steht auf der Filterungsseite der Bilanz.
Pflege und Reinigung
Alles, was das Element braucht, sind ein Kompressor und etwas Geduld. Luft wird an der zum Motor gerichteten Seite angesetzt und nach außen getrieben, bis sich die Oberfläche wieder öffnet; von der schmutzigen Seite aus würde sie nur tiefer hineingepresst. Nach wirklich schmutzigen Tagen übernehmen handwarmes Wasser mit einem milden Reinigungsmittel, und das Element wird gespült, bis nichts mehr abgeht. Getrocknet wird ausschließlich an der freien Luft, ohne Eile, denn Heißluftgebläse, Backöfen und Flammen zerstören Polyester endgültig, und es kehrt trocken und unbehandelt in das Gehäuse zurück.
