Eight motorcycles share this airbox, and the catalogue treats them almost identically: the same standard element, the same racing element, and for six of them the same 14 micron medium for dusty work. The Multistrada V4 is the exception at both ends of that. It is one of only two machines here not offered the intermediate step, and the only one offered the finest medium Sprint Filter makes. For this motorcycle the range reads 80 microns or 7, with nothing in between, which turns a decision that is gradual elsewhere into a plain one.

A range with a gap in the middle

The omission says something, though it should not be read as a prohibition — a catalogue lists what a manufacturer has specified, and silence is not a ruling. What it does mean practically is that on this machine there is no medium to reach for when conditions are merely dusty rather than severe. The choice is the standard weave or the extreme one, so it is worth being honest about the roads in question before ordering. A gravel car park once a summer is not the case for the PM160T12. A month of unmade tracks with luggage aboard is.

What the fine medium asks in return

560 litres per square metre per second against the standard element's 5,050 is a large step, and on a V4 of this displacement it is a real one rather than a rounding error: the finest medium in the range is asking a touring engine to work through the tightest cloth on offer. That is the trade, and it runs both ways — more held back, less passed through — which makes it a choice rather than a rank. Nothing about it is a power part. An element inside an unaltered airbox does not make a standard Multistrada quicker, and there is no version of this decision in which it does.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air is the routine service for the PM160T12: held against the clean side and blown outward, so the trapped material leaves the way it came in. After a wet or muddy stage, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it in circulating air alone until it is dry right through, with no heat gun, radiator or flame involved, and refit it dry with nothing applied to the medium.
