Es gibt zwei Möglichkeiten, sich bei diesem Luftfilterkasten beim Medium zu vertun, und sie sind nicht gleich schwerwiegend. Wird das 14-Mikron-Gewebe dort verbaut, wo die Luft sauber ist, ist der Fehler der Durchfluss: real, messbar gegenüber den 5.050 l/m²/sek. des gewebten Elements, und rückgängig gemacht in dem Moment, in dem das andere Element wieder eingesetzt wird. Wird das offene Gewebe dort verbaut, wo die Luft wirklich schmutzig ist, ist der Fehler alles, was hindurchgegangen ist, solange es verbaut war. Der eine Fehler wartet geduldig darauf, dass der Besitzer ihn bemerkt. Der andere ist bereits vollständig geschehen.

Zwei Fehler, zwei unterschiedliche Ausgänge
Ein Widerstand ist ein Zustand. Er lässt sich messen, zeigt sich an einem guten Tag am oberen Ende des Drehzahlbands, und er lässt sich mit einer Druckluftpistole oder einem anderen Element rückgängig machen. Abrasives Material, das das Medium passiert hat, ist dagegen Vergangenheit. Niemand kann später darauf zeigen, kein Serviceprotokoll erfasst es, und keine spätere Filterwahl macht es ungeschehen. Diese Asymmetrie ist der Grund, warum das feinere Ende der Produktreihe im Zweifel den Vorzug verdient, auch wenn die beiden Elemente auf dem Papier wie ein einfacher Tausch einer Eigenschaft gegen eine andere aussehen.
Was das feine Ende wirklich kostet
Nicht nichts. Auf fast zwei Drittel des ausgelegten Durchflusswerts zu verzichten, ist ein echtes Zugeständnis, und genau dieses Zugeständnis ist der Zweck dieses Mediums. Es sollte aus einem Grund gemacht werden – unbefestigte Straßen, trockener Staub, Schotter, eine Strecke, die überwiegend hinter anderem Verkehr verbracht wird – statt reflexhaft. Was es in keine Richtung ist, ist eine Leistungsentscheidung: Ein Einsteckelement macht ein Serienmotorrad nicht spürbar schneller, und der Anspruch, den es verteidigen lässt, ist der bescheidene: ein niedrigerer und stabilerer Ansaugwiderstand über die Serviceintervalle hinweg, mit einem Teil, das gereinigt statt weggeworfen wird.
Pflege und Reinigung
Für eine normale Reinigung reicht eine Druckluftpistole als komplettes Werkzeug: an der sauberen Seite ansetzen und nach außen arbeiten, bis das Gewebe klar ist. Ölige Verschmutzung braucht dagegen lauwarmes Wasser und ein mildes Spülmittel, gespült bis das Wasser klar abläuft. Getrocknet wird ausschließlich in bewegter Umgebungsluft, ohne Heizlüfter, Heizkörper oder Flamme in irgendeiner Phase, und der SM276P14 wird trocken und unbehandelt wieder in den Kasten eingesetzt.
