Diese Lücke ist aufschlussreich: Der Hersteller geht davon aus, dass dieses Motorrad Staub auf einer Straße begegnet, statt darin zu leben, und das im Folgenden beschriebene Medium ist das feinste, was er dafür anbietet.

Wo der Katalog endet – und warum das wichtig ist
Eine Spezifikation wird einmal gewählt und dann jahrelang gelebt, deshalb lautet die eigentliche Frage nicht, welches Medium am feinsten ist, sondern welches für die tatsächliche Nutzung des Motorrads ausgelegt wurde. Die extreme Stufe existiert für dauerhafte Belastung, loses Material unter statt neben der Maschine, Stunde um Stunde, und sie verlangt dafür einen Durchflusswert, der nur einen Bruchteil dessen des Standardpanels beträgt. Eine große Tourenmaschine auf befestigten Straßen würde diesen Preis bei jedem Kilometer zahlen und nur selten davon profitieren. Vierzehn Mikron und 1.800 l/m²/sek liegen dort, wo die staubigen Tage eines Straßenmotorrads tatsächlich stattfinden – deshalb endet die Liste, wo sie endet.
Der ehrliche Umriss des Gewinns
Feiner bedeutet mehr zurückgehalten und weniger durchgelassen. Beide Hälften dieses Satzes stimmen gleichzeitig, und keine macht das eine Medium dem anderen überlegen. Auch erzeugt keines von beiden Leistung: Ein Einsatzelement in einem unveränderten Luftfilterkasten lässt eine Standard-Challenger-Limited genau so stark wie zuvor, und eine Beschreibung, die etwas anderes andeutet, beschreibt das Teil nicht mehr richtig. Was sich ändert, ist der Besitz. Die Matte wird gereinigt und wieder eingesetzt statt neu gekauft, sodass der Ansaugwiderstand bei jedem Service auf einen bekannten Wert zurückkehrt, statt nur bis zur nächsten Bestellung eines Ersatzteils zu steigen.
Pflege und Reinigung
Druckluft erledigt die gewöhnliche Arbeit: an der sauberen Seite des PM237P14 angesetzt und die Belastung durch dieselbe Seite wieder hinausgetrieben, durch die sie hereinkam. Ein Film, den Luft nicht löst, geht mit lauwarmem Wasser und einem milden Reinigungsmittel ab, gespült, bis das ablaufende Wasser klar ist. Das Trocknen ist der Schritt ohne Toleranz – nur bewegte Luft bei Raumtemperatur, nie ein Heizkörper, eine Heißluftpistole oder eine Flamme, denn Hitze schädigt die Fasern lange bevor etwas sichtbar wird.
