Nur ein kleiner Teil des Staubs, mit dem ein Luftfilter zu tun hat, wird vom Motorrad selbst aufgewirbelt, das ihn einatmet. Er wird von dem hochgewirbelt, was einen Moment zuvor vorbeigefahren ist: das Auto voraus auf einer trockenen Schotterzufahrt, ein Traktor auf einem Feldweg im August, vier Motorräder vor Ihnen auf derselben unbefestigten Meile. An der Spitze einer Gruppe zu fahren und am Ende einer zu fahren bedeutet nicht dieselbe Luftversorgung, und an der Maschine selbst ändert sich dabei nichts. Genau diese Variable wird mit diesem Element gekauft.

Die Position in der Gruppe entscheidet über die Belastung
Aufgewirbelte Luft bleibt eine Weile aufgewirbelt. Der grobe Anteil dessen, was ein Rad hochschleudert, setzt sich schnell wieder ab, doch der feine Anteil bleibt dort hängen, wo er zurückgelassen wurde, und ein Fahrer, der ein paar Sekunden später eintrifft, sammelt ihn ein. Bei Rallyes und organisierten Ausfahrten kann eine Challenger Dark Horse einen ganzen Tag im Windschatten anderer verbringen, weshalb zwei baugleiche Maschinen auf derselben Route beim nächsten Service ganz unterschiedliche Elemente vorweisen können. Ein Medium wird deshalb für die schlechteste Gesellschaft gewählt, in der das Motorrad wahrscheinlich unterwegs ist, nicht für den Durchschnitt einer Saison.
Was die feinere Matte kostet
Jede feinere Abstufung wird mit Durchfluss bezahlt, und die Rechnung kommt bei jeder Fahrt, nicht nur an staubigen Tagen: 1.800 l/m²/sek hier gegenüber 5.050 beim Standardgewebe im selben Rahmen. Das ist der ganze Tausch, und es ist ein Tausch, keine Rangfolge – das gröbere Gewebe ist die richtige Wahl für eine Maschine, die auf sauberem Asphalt lebt. Es sollte auch klar gesagt werden: Keines der beiden Medien macht das Motorrad schneller. Ein Element in einem unveränderten Luftfilterkasten hat keinen Weg zu mehr Leistung. Was es bietet, ist ein Widerstandswert, der so oft wie nötig auf seinen Ausgangspunkt zurückgeführt werden kann.
Pflege und Reinigung
Das Wartungswerkzeug ist ein Luftstrahl, an der sauberen Seite des PM237P14 angesetzt und nach außen geführt, bis die Matte wieder gleichmäßig aussieht. Fett und Straßenfilm brauchen lauwarmes Wasser und ein mildes Spülmittel, gespült, bis nichts mehr abgeht. Danach nur noch offene Luft bei normaler Raumtemperatur: kein Wärmeschrank, keine Heißluftpistole, keine Flamme, denn Hitze ist es, was diese Elemente tatsächlich zerstört.
