The two halves of this trade do not arrive on the same schedule. The flow the nonwoven gives up is surrendered every minute the engine turns, in clean air exactly as much as in dirty. The retention it buys is collected only in the hours when there is something in the air worth stopping. That asymmetry, rather than a comparison of two numbers on a page, is the question a 368M owner is really answering: how much of the riding year is dusty.

Answering it honestly

Most riders can. A machine spending its life on sealed suburban roads in a wet climate collects very little of what this medium was built to hold, and pays the flow difference for every one of those kilometres regardless. A machine on farm roads through a dry summer, or one following other traffic onto unmade surfaces, sits on the other side of the sum. Neither answer is a verdict on the motorcycle: the 368M is the same machine in both cases, and what differs is the air it is asked to breathe.

What the rated figure does not cover

1,800 l/m²/sec describes clean material on a test bench, not the state of an element halfway through a service interval, and that is the second reason this is not a straight loss. A disposable panel is at its most open the day it is fitted and closes from there with nothing reporting the progress. This mat is put back to its own starting figure whenever it is blown through. What no medium here will do is add power — a drop-in element in an unmodified airbox has no mechanism for it, and this one deliberately hands flow back. The gain is a finer barrier and a restriction that keeps returning to a known value.

Care and cleaning

Blow the SM295P14 through from the clean face outwards so that the dust exits by the route it entered; for most services that is the entire job. Where the deposit is oily instead of dry, warm water and a mild detergent will lift it, and the element should be rinsed until the water leaves clear. Dry it only in moving air at room temperature — never with a flame, a warming cabinet or a heat gun — and refit it dry, with no spray or dressing of any kind.
