The panel KTM fits at the factory has to be right in Trondheim and in Rajasthan, on a bike ridden to work in the rain and on one that spends August behind agricultural traffic on dry back roads. That is a hard specification to write, and the answer is always a compromise pitched somewhere in the middle of the map. An owner has an easier problem: one bike, one country, one set of roads. PM283P14 is what the easier problem allows — a deliberately finer element for a 790 Duke that meets more dust than the average of KTM's markets.
Key Features
- Dry technical nonwoven, never oiled and never treated
- Filtration 14 microns; flow 1,800 litres per square metre per second
- Roughly twice the filtering area of other performance filters
- A depth material: the load is held through the thickness, not on one face
- Drop-in fit in the standard airbox, no modification and no remap
- Two-year warranty from the purchase date
What fourteen microns buys and what it costs
The P14 is not a tighter weave. It is a dry technical nonwoven, a different material made by a different process, filtering at 14 microns while passing 1,800 litres per square metre per second. The standard P08 in the same housing filters at 80 microns and passes 5,050. Roughly a third of the flow, then, exchanged for holding back a much finer fraction of what the road throws up. That is the whole transaction, and it runs both ways at once: there is no version of this choice where the retention arrives unpaid for. Nothing here makes a standard 790 Duke noticeably quicker — no drop-in element does — so the case has to be made on air.
When the factory compromise is wrong for you
The conditions that justify the swap are specific rather than general. Unsealed access roads at either end of an otherwise tarmac ride. Long dry spells when the surface itself gives up dust. A diversion through roadworks that is part of the commute for months. If none of that describes your year, the standard weave is the better specification and hands back flow you would otherwise pay for daily. Both elements are washable and both drop into the same unmodified housing, so this is a decision about conditions rather than a permanent commitment.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side outwards, which is the direction that lifts the load rather than driving it deeper into the material. When air stops working, warm water and a mild detergent, then a rinse until nothing more comes away. Air-drying only: no heat gun, no hairdryer, no flame, and no refitting until the element is dry right through. There is nothing to oil at the end, and nothing that can migrate downstream onto a sensor. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet for PM283P14 is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM 790 Duke built 2022 to 2026. The element also covers the Husqvarna Vitpilen 801 and Svartpilen 801, which share the airbox — three machines in all, listed under the Fitment tab. The 2018–2020 790 Duke uses a different Sprint Filter code, so the build year decides the order, not the model name.
