Winter grit does not leave when the frost does. It is spread as sharp mineral chippings, ground down under traffic for weeks, and then swept to the edges of the carriageway where it stays until the road is cleaned or the rain finally moves it. Through late winter and most of spring, every vehicle that passes lifts some of it back into the air, and a motorcycle rides in exactly the band where it is thickest. Roads can look completely clear while this is going on. PM46P14 is the element specified for that kind of air: a dry nonwoven rated at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec.

US market only

One thing has to be settled before the cloth is. Sprint Filter records PM46P14 for the CBR600RR sold in the United States. The CBR600RR built from 2021 for Europe and other markets is listed against a different family altogether, the SM262 references, and its dust cloth is SM262P14. The name on the tank is the same; the part is not. Take the year from the registration document and the market the machine was delivered to, and the reference follows.

The season nobody counts as dusty

Dust is filed as a summer problem, or a problem of unsurfaced roads, and a faired supersport in northern Europe is assumed to meet neither. The grit cycle argues otherwise. What is lifted off a swept-out road edge is fine, hard and mineral, which is the least forgiving combination an intake can be given, and unlike agricultural dust it arrives over months rather than in a single afternoon. A rider who uses the bike from the first dry spell in February onwards is riding through the whole of it. That is the case for a finer cloth here, and it is a seasonal case rather than a permanent one.

The other half of the trade

Fourteen microns is bought with flow: 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard P08 at 80 µm. On a supersport that is a real consideration, because this is one of the engine layouts that can genuinely draw on rated capacity — an inline four held high in its range pulls steadily rather than in gaps. The honest reading is that the P14 gives back reserve the bike is capable of using, in exchange for holding more of what is in the air. Neither cloth is better; they are specified for different air. And neither makes a standard 600 stronger.

Care and cleaning

Blow PM46P14 out with compressed air applied to the clean side, so grit leaves by the face it entered instead of being driven deeper into the mat. Where air is not enough, wash it in warm water with a mild dish soap and rinse thoroughly. Drying is the step that cannot be hurried: still air only, never a heat source and never a flame, and it goes back into the airbox dry and untreated. PM46P14 is listed against the Honda CBR600RR from 2020 to 2026, US market only — a single machine on this reference. A CBR600RR delivered outside the United States takes SM262P14 instead.
