A 1199 R is rarely a daily motorcycle. It is kept, insured, started on good days and put away again, and it will very likely outlive several of its owners' other bikes. Machines that stand have a specific problem, and it is not the one their owners usually worry about: what settles in the intake tract over a long standstill is fine airborne dust, the kind measured in single-digit microns, and it settles whether or not the engine ever runs.

What a garage actually contains

Brake dust from the car parked alongside, concrete dust off the floor, textile fibres, the fine grit that comes in on shoes and tyres — a domestic garage is not a clean room, and an airbox is not sealed. Over a winter that adds up, and the first ride of the season draws all of it towards the engine. A standard 80-micron element passes a good deal of material in that size range simply because it was never designed to catch it. The P14 retains down to 14 microns, which is a different proposition entirely for a motorcycle whose annual mileage is measured in hundreds.

Nothing changed that a future owner would see

The element is a direct replacement in the standard airbox. Nothing is cut, nothing is drilled, no bracket is added, and the engine management is untouched — no remap, and none needed. Close the airbox and the motorcycle is exactly as it was. The original element can go on a shelf in a bag; returning the bike to catalogue specification is a ten-minute job. For a machine bought partly for what it will still be in fifteen years, that reversibility is worth as much as the filtration.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards — a non-woven medium releases dust readily and needs nothing else in normal use. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air; never with heat, never with a flame. Refit it dry.
