The rule of thumb says finer costs more. On this airbox it does not. The P14 mat filters to 14 microns where the standard weave opens to 80, and it is listed at about three quarters of what the standard element costs — while the racing weave, the most open cloth of the three, costs more than three times what the mat does. On the most lavishly equipped K 1600 of the four, the cheapest of the three available elements is also the finest. Price tells you nothing here about what to buy.

Then what does decide it

Conditions, and only conditions. Each medium listed for this housing answers a different question: the 80 µm weave for ordinary road and track use, this 14-micron mat for dust and long dry distances, the 85 µm racing weave for sustained wide-open running. Finer retains more and flows less, coarser the reverse, and no amount of money moves that relationship. An owner touring in high summer, behind traffic, on dry roads is choosing the mat because of the roads. One who never leaves damp northern tarmac is choosing the weave for a reason of the same kind. Neither has bought a better filter.

What the mat gives up

Air, measurably: 1,800 l/m²/sec against 5,050 through the same panel. On an Exclusive — heavy, tall-geared, more often two-up than not — that ceiling sits far above anything the engine asks for on a public road, which is what makes the trade comfortable here. The other admission belongs in the same paragraph. PM187P14 will not make a standard K 1600 noticeably stronger; filters fitted inside untouched airboxes do not do that. It filters more finely, is emptied with air instead of thrown away, and holds its restriction steady between services.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, blowing outward, handles the dust the mat has collected. Direction matters more with a non-woven than with anything else, since dirt pushed the wrong way goes into the material rather than off it. Water is the second stage and the rarer one: lukewarm, a little mild detergent, rinsed through until it runs clean. Afterwards the element dries in moving air only — never against heat, never near a flame — and goes back into the box dry, with no oil, no spray and no dressing of any kind. Fitment & Compatibility

Listed for the BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive of 2013 to 2016, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox.
