Die GSX-8S ist die schlichteste der vier Maschinen, die um diesen Luftfilterkasten herum gebaut sind: ein Naked-Roadster mit offen liegendem Reihen-Twin und keiner Verkleidung zwischen Fahrer und Wetter. Sie ist zudem durchweg elektronisch: Die Drosselklappen werden per Ride-by-Wire statt per Seilzug geöffnet, und wie weit sie öffnen, hängt davon ab, was die Sensoren über die einströmende Luft messen. Das ist relevant dafür, welches Element in das Gehäuse gehört, denn es entscheidet, was sich vor diesen Sensoren befinden darf. Der Sprint Filter P08 SM245S ist trocken. Er trägt keinerlei Ölfilm, sodass nichts im Ansaugtrakt nach vorne wandern und sich auf einer Sensorfläche absetzen kann.

Nichts Geöltes vor den Sensoren
Die übliche Alternative zu einem trockenen Filter ist geöltes Baumwollgewebe, das Schmutz in einem klebrigen Film einfängt. Dieser Film ist ein Verbrauchsmaterial direkt vor den Drosselklappen, dosiert von demjenigen, der zuletzt gewartet hat – zu viel, und ein Teil davon landet dort, wo es nie hingehört hätte. Bei einem Motorrad, das seine Kraftstoffzufuhr elektronisch anhand gemessener Luft bestimmt, ist das eine Variable, auf die man besser verzichtet. Das trockene Gewebe hält zudem mehr zurück: Sprint Filter maß bei vierlagiger geölter Baumwolle eine Rückhalterate von 76,42 Prozent bei 100-Mikrometer-Testpartikeln, gegenüber 93,13 Prozent beim P08.
Was sich ändert – und was nicht
Ein Element im Serien-Luftfilterkasten macht ein Serienmotorrad nicht spürbar stärker, und der P08 wird nicht mit diesem Versprechen verkauft. Die Ansaugkanäle, die Drosselklappen und die Abstimmung entscheiden, was dem Motor zugeführt wird; der Filter entscheidet, wie konstant diese Zufuhr zwischen den Services bleibt. Eine Papierpatrone ist an dem Tag, an dem sie eingebaut wird, am durchlässigsten und schließt sich danach allmählich. Der P08 ist eine einzelne Lage gewebtes Polyester aus Fäden ab 22 Mikrometern Durchmesser, die 5.050 Liter pro Quadratmeter und Sekunde über etwa die doppelte Fläche anderer Filter durchlässt, und er wird zurück in diesen Zustand gewaschen statt ersetzt. Wo die Luft anspruchsvoller ist, webt Sprint Filter feiner – P037 mit 37 Mikrometern, P14 mit 14, T12 mit 7 –, und jede Stufe feiner kostet Durchfluss, der P14 lässt noch 1.800 durch. Ein Kompromiss, keine Rangfolge.
Pflege und Reinigung
Bei einem auf der Straße gefahrenen Roadster besteht die ganze Arbeit aus einer Druckluftpistole: an die saubere Seite des SM245S halten und nach außen blasen. Braucht es mehr, genügen lauwarmes Wasser und ein mildes Reinigungsmittel, gespült, bis das Wasser klar bleibt. Lassen Sie das Element an der frischen Luft vollständig trocknen, fern von Hitze und Flamme, und bauen Sie es trocken wieder ein. Das Wartungsblatt finden Sie im Downloads-Tab.
