Ein Element wird um ein Gehäuse herum konstruiert, nicht um einen Hubraum, und fast jede Teilenummer in diesem Katalog bedient eine Familie: ein Luftfilterkasten, geteilt von vier oder fünf Maschinen mit unterschiedlichen Motoren und Ansprüchen. PM246S bedient genau ein Motorrad. Die R 18 hat ihr eigenes Gehäuse, ihre eigene Teilenummer und eine Fitment-Liste von genau einer Zeile, was bedeutet, dass das Element darin auf die Anforderung eines einzelnen Motors hin spezifiziert wurde, nicht auf den anspruchsvollsten Fall einer Baureihe.

Eine Maschine, eine Spezifikation
Der große Twin in der R 18 verrichtet seine Arbeit im unteren Drehzahlbereich und ist genau dafür übersetzt und abgestimmt, was ein ganz anderes Anforderungsprofil ist als bei einem Supersport-Vierzylinder, der sich seinen Luftfilterkasten mit drei anderen Modellen teilt. Ein Teil, das für eine einzige Maschine konstruiert ist, kann genau dort sitzen, wo diese Maschine es braucht. Das vereinfacht auch die Bestellung: kein Baujahrsprung zu prüfen, keine Variante, die still ein anderes Gehäuse bekommen hat, und keine Möglichkeit, den richtigen Namen für den falschen Ansaugtrakt zu kaufen. Drei Medien sind für dieses eine Motorrad gelistet, und das Standardgewebe ist darunter die Standardwahl.
Was sich ändert und was nicht
Der eigene Vergleich von Sprint Filter beziffert dieses trockene Gewebe mit 93,13 % Rückhaltevermögen bei 100-Mikron-Testpartikeln gegenüber 76,42 % bei vierlagiger geölter Baumwolle, und das erreicht es völlig ohne Öl: nichts, was nach einer Wäsche neu aufgetragen werden muss, und nichts, das stromabwärts wandern kann. Was es nicht bewirkt, ist mehr Leistung. Ein Element in einem unveränderten Luftfilterkasten kann das nicht, weder bei diesem Motor noch bei irgendeinem anderen, und eine R 18 ist von vornherein keine Maschine, die wegen Spitzenwerten gekauft wird. Die eigentliche Veränderung ist, dass der Ansaugwiderstand nach jeder Reinigung auf denselben Wert zurückkehrt, statt langsam anzusteigen, bis ein Service das Papierelement entsorgt.
Pflege und Reinigung
PM246S ist eher eine Werkbank- als eine Straßenrand-Arbeit, und eine einfache dazu: Druckluft an der sauberen Seite, nach außen geblasen, bis das Gewebe sauber ist. Ist die Ablagerung fettig geworden – meist ein Sommer voller Insekten statt Staub –, entfernt handwarmes Wasser mit mildem Reinigungsmittel sie, klar gespült. Ausschließlich in bewegter Luft trocknen, ohne Heißluftpistole, ohne Heizkörper und ohne Flamme in der Nähe, denn Hitze ist es, die Polyester zerstört, dann trocken und ungeölt wieder einbauen. Passform & Kompatibilität
Für die BMW R 18, gebaut von 2020 bis 2026, als direkter Ersatz im Serien-Luftfilterkasten. Die Fitment-Liste enthält ausschließlich diese Maschine. Für dasselbe Gehäuse sind zwei weitere Medien gelistet: der 14-Mikron-PM246P14 für staubige Straßen und der Racing-PM246S F1-85. Der Fitment-Tab zeigt den Baujahreszeitraum.
