Zwei verschiedene Dinge füllen und leeren die Spezifikation dieses Elements. Was das Gewebe an seiner Grenze durchlassen kann, ist eine Gasgriff-Eigenschaft: Sie zeigt sich nur, wenn der Motor alles verlangt, was bei einem Naked-Boxer eine Sekunde hier und da bedeutet. Was das Gewebe sammelt, ist eine Volumen-Eigenschaft: Es akkumuliert mit jedem Liter Luft, den der Motor je gezogen hat, bei jeder Gasstellung, im Verkehr genauso wie überall sonst. Die hundert Prozent mehr Filterfläche des Katalogs wirken ausschließlich auf die zweite.

Belastet durch Volumen, nicht durch Anstrengung
Ein Motor, der durch eine Stadt tuckert, zieht durchgehend Luft, und die gesamte Menge durchquert den Filter. Über ein Jahr betrachtet liegt das Gesamtvolumen, das eine für kurze Fahrten im Verkehr genutzte Maschine bewegt, nicht weit von dem entfernt, was eine für lange, schnelle Fahrten genutzte bewegt – der Unterschied liegt in der zeitlichen Verteilung. Da die Last, die ein Element trägt, von diesem Volumen und davon abhängt, was die Luft gerade enthielt, sammelt ein täglich gefahrener Roadster mit ordentlichem Tempo an, während er sich dem Durchflusswert auf der Packung fast nie nähert. Doppeltes Gewebe bedeutet doppelt so viel Platz dafür.
Und der Wert, der auf der Packung bleibt
Die 15.000 l/m²/sek gehören zur anderen Nutzungsart. Sie wurden für weit geöffnetes Gas ausgelegt, hoch im Drehzahlband gehalten und wiederholt angefahren, was eine Streckenbeschreibung ist, und eine unverkleidete Maschine erreicht diesen Zustand allenfalls kurz. Das Standardgewebe für dasselbe Gehäuse ist mit 5.050 l/m²/sek angegeben und war bislang nie das, was im Weg stand. Die vernünftige Zusammenfassung lautet: Das Medium ist bei einer R 1250 R optional, während die Fläche jeden Tag arbeitet. Keines von beiden ist ein Leistungsteil: Ein Element in einem unveränderten Luftfilterkasten lässt eine Standard-R-1250-R genau so stark wie zuvor.
Pflege und Reinigung
Eine Druckluftleitung und ein paar Minuten reichen. Die Düse auf die zum Motor gewandte Seite richten, damit die Last aus dem Gewebe zurück- statt hindurchgedrückt wird, und den Druck moderat halten. Hat sich ein Film festgesetzt, der sich nicht wegblasen lässt, das Gewebe in handwarmem Wasser mit einer Spur mildem Spülmittel waschen und spülen, bis nichts mehr austritt. Danach an bewegter Luft trocknen lassen, vollständig und in eigenem Tempo, dabei jede Wärmequelle und jede Flamme fernhalten – das, nicht Schmutz, ist es, was einem Polyesterelement ein Ende setzt. Das K142S F1-85 kommt trocken zurück. Das Wartungsblatt liegt unter Downloads.

Gefertigt für die BMW R 1250 R von 2019 bis 2023, sitzend im Standard-Luftfilterkasten ohne jede Veränderung.
