Standard elements are priced housing by housing and the figures scatter widely, because a small single-cylinder box and a large boxer box are not the same object. What a flat price tells the buyer

That the premium you pay is a property of your motorcycle rather than of the medium. This housing takes one of the larger and dearer standard elements in the BMW listing, so the step up to the racing weave here is smaller than it is on the roadster housing next to it, where the same cloth sits well over two times the price of the standard part. Against this airbox it is not quite twice. Nothing about the cloth changed between those two cases; only the thing it is being compared with did.

Whether it belongs on a GS at all

Rarely, and it is worth saying so. The medium is drawn for repeated, sustained full-throttle work, and by Sprint Filter's own account it is the most widely used air filter in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock, which is the maker describing itself rather than an independent finding. At 85 microns it screens marginally wider than the 80-micron standard weave and flows around three times as freely: coarser passes more and retains less, finer does the opposite, and neither direction is an improvement in the abstract. On a heavy adventure machine the conditions that would call on 15,000 l/m²/sec effectively never arrive, and no element in a series airbox makes an R 1300 GS noticeably stronger regardless.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air across the clean side of SM260S F1-85 and outward through the loaded face is the routine, and it is quick enough to do between rides. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent take over when air is not enough, followed by a thorough rinse.
