This element is bought once and settled over years, so the honest question is not whether it is any good but whether the machine will be kept long enough for the arithmetic to close. A washable filter trades a recurring line on the service invoice for a single one at the start. Measured over one interval that is the worse deal. When the paper panel is the better answer

If the Valico 900 DSX is going to be sold on before the second or third service, the standard panel is cheaper and better matched, and nothing on this page changes that. The same goes for a household where nobody is going to lift the element out and blow it through — an unserviced washable filter is simply a filter, with none of the advantage it was bought for. Saying so is more useful than selling the part into a garage where it will sit and quietly load up. The purchase makes sense on repetition, and repetition is a decision about the owner rather than the motorcycle.

What is being bought instead

A dry weave that runs the whole of its life without a drop of oil, so there is no coating to reapply after washing and nothing that can migrate onto the sensors downstream. Openings formed by filaments from 22 microns upward, retaining 93.13 per cent of 100-micron particles where a four-layer oiled cotton filter is measured at 76.42. Roughly double the surface area of other performance elements, folded into a housing that is not modified in any way. And the honest ceiling: it does not make a standard machine noticeably faster. It keeps the intake resistance low and level between services, and it stops the annual reorder.

Care and cleaning

A service costs a few minutes and no parts at all. Lift the PM188S out, hold an air line at roughly a hand's distance and work from the clean face outward until the weave looks even again. Anything that stays behind washes off in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until clear.
