Most Z1000SX on the road now are on their second or third owner, and a viewing tells you very little about the intake. Tyres, chain, brake discs and fork seals are all visible; a service book records what was paid for, not what was done well. The airbox is the part nobody opens before handing over the money. The one service item you can verify yourself

A neglected paper element does not announce itself. It does not misfire, it does not light a warning lamp, and it will pass an inspection that consists of looking at the outside of the motorcycle. It simply raises the pressure the engine has to pull against, gradually, in a way that is easy to mistake for the bike having always been like that. Opening the airbox once and putting a clean, washable element in it converts an unknown into a routine — after that, holding it up to a light is the whole inspection.

What a sport-tourer collects

These bikes are used for the job they were sold for: motorway miles, luggage, commuting, weekends away. That is a diet of fine road dust and rubber particulate at high flow rates, and it loads a filter faster than the odometer suggests. The P08 answers that with roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters, so the same amount of dirt is spread over more medium before it starts to matter, and with a service that is compressed air rather than a new part every time.

Care and cleaning

Holding it up to a light is the inspection; compressed air from the clean side, blown outwards, is the service. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and dry it fully in open air — never with heat, never with a flame. It goes back in dry, unoiled.
