Es lohnt sich, „wasserabweisend" über das zu definieren, was es nicht bedeutet, denn der Begriff verspricht mehr, als er hält. Es ist kein Schnorchel, und es macht einen Luftfilterkasten nicht wasserdicht; es ist keine Erlaubnis, durch stehendes Wasser zu fahren; und es ändert nichts daran, woher die Monster 821 ihre Luft bezieht. Was es beschreibt, ist eine Eigenschaft des Gewebes selbst: Das Gewebe stößt Wasser ab, statt es aufzunehmen und zu halten. Das ist eine eng gefasste Aussage, und eng gefasste Aussagen sind die nützliche Sorte.

Warum ein nasses Element ein eigenes Problem ist
Ein Element, das Wasser aufgenommen hat, hat einen anderen Widerstand als eines, das trocken eingebaut wurde, und das geschieht während der Fahrt, genau zu dem Zeitpunkt am Tag, an dem das Wetter am wenigsten hilfreich ist. Genau dieses Problem adressiert diese Qualitätsstufe, und bei einem unverkleideten Roadster ist das kein exotisches Szenario: Der Fahrer entscheidet morgens, ob er losfährt, und das Motorrad nimmt dann hin, was der Nachmittag bringt. Der Gewinn ist ein Widerstand, der dort bleibt, wo er gemessen wurde. Es ist kein Leistungsgewinn – nichts, was in einen Serien-Luftfilterkasten eingesetzt wird, macht eine Monster 821 stärker.
Den Rückhaltewert richtig lesen
Sprint Filter veröffentlicht für diese Qualitätsstufe 91,8 Prozent, und die Zahl muss in ihrem eigenen Rahmen gesehen werden. Sie wurde mit 37-µm-Partikeln ermittelt; die für das Standardgewebe angegebenen 93,13 Prozent stammen aus einem Test mit 100-µm-Partikeln. Das sind zwei Experimente, nicht zwei Punkte auf einer Skala, und das eine vom anderen abzuziehen ergibt nichts. Was sich direkt vergleichen lässt, ist die Auslegung: 37 µm gegenüber 80, und 4.500 Liter pro Quadratmeter und Sekunde gegenüber 5.050.
Pflege und Reinigung
Zuerst Luft, an der sauberen Seite des R61S-WP-SBK und nach außen gerichtet, das erledigt das Meiste. Wasser, wo Luft nicht reicht – handwarm, etwas mildes Reinigungsmittel, gespült, bis es klar abläuft; das wasserabweisende Gewebe wird wie jedes andere gewaschen und nimmt dabei keinen Schaden. Getrocknet wird ausschließlich in zirkulierender Luft, ohne Hitze und ohne Flamme in der Nähe des Gewebes, und das Element geht trocken und unbehandelt wieder ein. Passform & Kompatibilität
