Die R9 kam mit einem Gesicht, über das Yamaha erkennbar nachgedacht hat: zwei Scheinwerfer in einer Nase, die darunter funktionale Winglets trägt — laut Hersteller sechs bis sieben Prozent weniger Auftrieb vorn auf der Geraden und bis zu zehn Prozent weniger in Schräglage. CY20210 ersetzt das alles, sobald das Motorrad Rennen fährt: eine einteilige Carbonmaske ganz ohne Lichtausschnitte, auf dieselbe Frontform gezogen, aber als Bauteil gebaut und nicht als Scheinwerfergehäuse.

Warum die Maske das schwierige Teil ist
Eine Frontmaske muss zwei Dinge leisten, die gegeneinander arbeiten. Sie muss ihre Form bei hohem Tempo halten, wo der Staudruck auf eine große, kaum abgestützte Fläche drückt, und sie muss leicht bleiben, weil alles am Vorderbau vor der Lenkachse sitzt und dagegen wirkt, wie schnell das Motorrad einlenkt. Carbonin löst das über die Aushärtung statt über Material: ein unter Autoklavdruck konsolidiertes Prepreg-Laminat ist steif genug, um dünn gebaut zu werden, während ein handlaminiertes Teil gleichen Gewichts an der Vorderkante nachgeben würde.
Was sich am Motorrad ändert
Mit der Serienfront gehen Scheinwerfer, Blinker und deren Kabelbaum. Übrig bleibt eine Maske, die sich in einem Stück abheben lässt — Zugang zum Steuerkopf und zur Vorderseite der Airbox, was bei der R9 zählt, weil der Ansaugweg des Dreizylinders direkt hinter diesem Teil nach oben führt. Das Motorrad ist danach nicht mehr straßentauglich; das ist der bewusste Tausch.
