Das ist das Teil, das eine Auspuffanlage legal hält. Ein Katalysator ist keine Aufwertung, sondern die Bedingung, auf der eine Typgenehmigung ruht — und an einer Akrapovic-Anlage für die ZZR1400 ist er ein eigener Kauf und nichts Eingebautes.

Warum es ein Satz aus zweien ist
Kawasakis 1.441-cm³-Reihenvierzylinder teilt sein Abgas auf zwei Stränge auf, von denen jeder einen eigenen Katalysator braucht. P-KAT-054 sind schlicht zwei P-KAT-052 in einer Packung, und für eine vollständige Montage werden beide gebraucht.
Einen einzelnen Katalysator für dieses Motorrad zu kaufen ließe die Hälfte des Abgases unbehandelt — deshalb verkauft Akrapovic das Paar unter einer eigenen Nummer.
Was tatsächlich darin steckt
Eine Metallwabe mit Edelmetallen auf der Oberfläche — Palladium, Rhodium und Platin. Abgas, das über diese Flächen streicht, gibt sein Kohlenmonoxid und die unverbrannten Kohlenwasserstoffe ab, die in Kohlendioxid und Wasserdampf umgewandelt werden.
Der Edelmetallgehalt bildet den größten Teil des Preises ab. Er ist auch der Grund, warum man einen Katalysator nicht gebraucht oder aus unbekannter Quelle kauft: Die Beschichtung ist das Produkt, und man sieht sie nicht.
Auf Leistung ausgelegt, nicht auf Drosselung
Akrapovic gibt an, leistungsorientierte Katalysatoren zu verwenden, die Klang und Leistung liefern, für die seine Anlagen bekannt sind. Ein Katalysator ist immer ein Widerstand; die technische Frage lautet, wie klein dieser Widerstand sein kann, ohne die Aufgabe zu verfehlen.
Das ist der Unterschied zu einem Ersatzteil von der Stange, und deshalb setzen die veröffentlichten Werte einer Akrapovic-Anlage den Akrapovic-Katalysator voraus.
Wann Sie ihn brauchen
Wird eine Akrapovic-Anlage für dieses Motorrad mit einer Typgenehmigung verkauft, die an einen eingebauten Katalysator geknüpft ist, dann ist dieser Katalysator gemeint. Ohne ihn hat die Anlage auf öffentlicher Straße keine gültige Genehmigung.
Ebenso ist es das Teil, das man bestellt, wenn ein Originalkatalysator nach hoher Laufleistung ausgefallen ist und das Motorrad durch die nächste Hauptuntersuchung soll.
Keine Auspuffanlage
Damit klar ist, was in der Packung liegt: zwei Katalysatoren und sonst nichts. Kein Dämpfer, kein Verbindungsrohr, kein Krümmer. Dieses Teil vervollständigt eine Anlage, es ist keine.
Die Maschine
Die ZZR1400, in manchen Märkten als ZX-14R verkauft, war Kawasakis Hypertourer und eines der schnellsten Serienmotorräder ihrer Zeit. Die Maschinen von 2016 bis 2020 sind die letzten der Baureihe, und sie werden behalten und gepflegt statt schnell weitergegeben.
