Eine lange Route wird nach ihrem schwierigsten Abschnitt geplant, nicht nach ihrem durchschnittlichen: Reifen, Gepäck und Reichweite werden alle für die schlimmsten zweihundert Kilometer auf der Karte gewählt. Ein Luftfilter lässt sich genauso auslegen, und bei einer TRK 702 sieht das beim T12 so aus – 7 µm Rückhaltevermögen, bereitgehalten für den Schotterabschnitt, den Erntemonat, die Tage hinter anderen Fahrzeugen auf unbefestigten Straßen. Die Frage, die vor der Bestellung zu klären ist: Existiert dieser Abschnitt tatsächlich auf Ihrer Karte? Wo das der Fall ist, verdient sich die Matte den Luftdurchsatz, auf den sie verzichtet. Wo es nur Wunschdenken ist, wird der Luftdurchsatz auch an jedem anderen Tag des Jahres geopfert.

Durchschnittswerte verbergen die Stunden, die zählen
Staub kommt nicht gleichmäßig. Ein Sommer sauberer Autobahn kann an einem einzigen Nachmittag auf einer trockenen, unbefestigten Straße mit Verkehr davor zunichtegemacht werden, und genau für diesen Nachmittag wird eine feinere Matte gekauft. Deshalb ist ein Durchschnittswert eine schlechte Grundlage für die Wahl eines Mediums und ein Spitzenwert eine gute: Partikel, die einen Filter passieren, werden am Saisonende nicht zurückgegeben. Das Gegenteil verdient dieselbe Ehrlichkeit. Tritt der Spitzenwert nie ein, ist nichts gewonnen, denn dieses Element kann eine Serien-TRK 702 nicht spürbar stärker machen und war dafür auch nie gedacht.
Was der Spitzenwert auf gewöhnlichen Straßen kostet
An jedem Tag, an dem die Matte eingebaut ist, rund ein Neuntel des Nenndurchsatzes pro Quadratmeter Material. Rückhaltevermögen und Durchsatz sind Enden ein und desselben Hebels, und abstrakt betrachtet ist keines der beiden Medien dem anderen überlegen; die 7-µm-Matte sitzt einfach am schützenden Ende. Fahrer, die eine Tour in staubiges Land planen und für den Rest des Jahres das Straßengewebe wollen, behalten beide Elemente: Beide sind waschbar, beide sind trocken, und keines nutzt sich dadurch ab, dass es aus dem Motorrad ausgebaut wird.
Pflege und Reinigung
Zuerst Luft, von der sauberen Seite, geduldig über die Oberfläche geführt, denn ein feines Vlies gibt seine Ladung nur langsam wieder ab und reagiert nicht gut auf harte Stöße. Bleibt ein Film zurück, erledigt lauwarmes Wasser mit einer Spur mildem Reinigungsmittel und eine gründliche Spülung den Rest. Danach trocknet alles in Umgebungsluft – kein Heizkörper, keine Heißluftpistole, keine Flamme –, bevor der SM258T12 trocken und unbehandelt zurück in den Kasten geht.
