Ein Mikronwert ist eine Eigenschaft eines Materials, und ein Motor wird nicht durch ein Material geschützt. Er wird durch ein Material geschützt, das dicht an seiner Position sitzt, denn Luft nimmt jeden Weg, der ihr offensteht, und der Weg am Rand eines Elements vorbei filtert nichts. Das ist die wenig glanzvolle Hälfte jeder Filterspezifikation, und deshalb lohnt sich ein Staubelement nur, wenn es die richtige Form hat: Der PM142P14 behält Umriss und Dichtfläche des Elements, auf das der BMW-Luftfilterkastendeckel ausgelegt ist.

Die Hälfte der Filterung, die nie beziffert wird
Veröffentlichte Werte beschreiben ein Gewebe im Labor: so viele Mikron, so viele Liter pro Quadratmeter und Sekunde. Am Motorrad montiert, ist ein Medium nur so gut wie die Dichtstelle darum herum, und eine kleine Undichtigkeit ist schlimmer, als es klingt: Ungefilterte Luft wird nicht etwas schlechter gefiltert, sie wird überhaupt nicht gefiltert. Das spricht nicht besonders für ein feines Medium. Es spricht für eines, das ohne Überredung passt, und genau das tut dieses: Es nimmt den Platz des Standardelements ein, der Deckel schließt wie immer, und es kommt kein Distanzstück oder Zuschnitt ins Spiel.
Wofür die feine Matte dann gut ist
Vierzehn Mikron gegenüber den achtzig des Standardgewebes, bei einem Nenndurchsatz von 1.800 l/m²/sek gegenüber 5.050 – weniger Luft durch dieselbe Materialfläche, im Tausch dafür wird mehr von dem zurückgehalten, was die Luft mit sich trägt. Der Tausch wirkt in beide Richtungen und lässt sich nicht umgehen, weshalb die beiden Medien nebeneinandergestellt und nicht gegeneinander bewertet werden. Bei einem Roadster, der trockene Sommer hinter Erntezeit-Verkehr und entlang unbefestigter Ränder verbringt, ist das feinere Ende vertretbar; bei einem, der auf nassem Stadtasphalt lebt, ist es Rückhaltung, die gekauft, aber nicht genutzt wird. Keines der beiden Elemente ist ein Leistungsteil: Ein Filter, der in einen unveränderten Luftfilterkasten eingesetzt wird, macht eine Standard-R-1250-R nicht spürbar stärker.
Pflege und Reinigung
Druckluft, an der sauberen Seite angesetzt und nach außen geführt, ist die gesamte gewöhnliche Wartung; eine Matte, die von der schmutzigen Seite angegangen wird, schluckt das, was eigentlich hinausbefördert werden sollte. Reicht Luft nicht mehr aus, waschen Sie sie mit handwarmem Wasser und etwas mildem Reinigungsmittel und spülen, bis das Wasser klar abläuft. Dann der langsame Teil: Sie trocknet ausschließlich an der freien Luft, denn Heißluftgebläse, Heizkörper und Flammen zerstören Polyester allesamt, und sie muss durchgetrocknet sein, bevor sie zurückkommt – eine noch feuchte Matte setzt sich weit schneller zu als eine trockene. Ungeölt wieder einsetzen; das Wartungsblatt finden Sie im Reiter „Downloads".
