Über eine Durchflussreserve lässt sich leicht streiten, sie tatsächlich abzurufen ist schwer. Bei der Z900 ist die Diskussion zumindest eine echte: Das ist ein großer Vierzylinder mit einer wirklichen Spitzenleistung, und ein Medium, das bis 14 Mikron filtert, lässt 1.800 l/m²/sek durch, während der Standard-P08 5.050 durchlässt. Die Frage, die man zuerst stellen sollte, ist nicht, ob die Reserve existiert, sondern wie viele Stunden im Jahr diese konkrete Z900 sie tatsächlich beansprucht — Vollgas, obere Hälfte des Drehzahlbereichs, nichts davor. Bei den meisten straßengefahrenen Z900 lautet die ehrliche Antwort ein paar Stunden über eine ganze Saison, während Staub bei jeder einzelnen Fahrt anfällt. Der Sprint Filter PM165P14 ist für die Maschinen gedacht, bei denen diese Rechnung eindeutig für die Rückhaltung ausfällt. Wo das nicht der Fall ist, ist der P08 der bessere Kauf.

Was die Reserve bei Vollgas wert ist
Ein Durchflusswert beschreibt das Medium, nicht das Motorrad. Der Widerstand wird erst dann zum begrenzenden Faktor, wenn der Motor alles verlangt, was er bekommen kann — bei einem 900er-Vierzylinder bedeutet das dritter Gang, Vollgas, jenseits der Drehzahlbereichsmitte. Es ist eher eine Decke nahe der Spitze als eine Steuer auf jeden Kilometer, und daran, wie das Motorrad aus einer Kreuzung heraus beschleunigt, ändert sich nichts. Aber es ist eine echte Decke, und bei diesem Motor ist sie tatsächlich erreichbar. Fährt die Z900 auf der Rennstrecke, oder ist das obere Drehzahldrittel der Grund für den Kauf gewesen, hält der P08 mit 80 Mikron und 5.050 l/m²/sek die bessere Balance. Feiner hält mehr zurück und lässt weniger durch: zwei Richtungen ein und desselben Kompromisses, keine Gut-Besser-Am-besten-Leiter.
Die eigenen Stunden zählen
Fahrer überschätzen ihre Zeit bei Vollgas, daher lohnt sich eine saubere Rechnung. Addieren Sie die Sekunden, die tatsächlich nahe am Anschlag in der oberen Drehzahlhälfte über eine Woche Fahren verbracht werden, und die Summe bleibt klein. Die Staubbelastung ist die leichter zu beurteilende Hälfte, weil man sie sehen kann: unbefestigte Wege, Baustellen, lange Trockenperioden, ein Motorrad, das im Freien steht. Wo diese beiden Schätzungen landen, entscheidet über das Medium — und sie landen bei zwei Z900 mit demselben Luftfilterkasten und demselben Baujahr im Fahrzeugschein durchaus unterschiedlich.
Pflege und Reinigung
Druckluft von der sauberen Seite nach außen erledigt das meiste. Für eine gründliche Reinigung lauwarmes Wasser mit mildem Spülmittel, gespült bis das Wasser klar bleibt, danach vollständig an der Luft getrocknet — niemals mit Hitze, niemals über einer Flamme — und trocken wieder eingesetzt.
