There are two ways to get the medium wrong in this airbox, and they are not the same size. Fit the 14 micron mat where the air is clean and the mistake is flow: real, measurable against the 5,050 l/m²/sec of the woven element, and undone the moment the other one goes back in. Fit the open weave where the air is genuinely dirty and the mistake is everything that went through while it was in there. One error waits patiently for the owner to notice it. The other has already finished happening.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven medium filtering to 14 microns
- Rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard weave in the same housing
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of comparable performance filters
- Slots into the series case in place of the paper panel; no modification, no fuelling change
- Never oiled, so nothing travels downstream to the throttle body or the intake sensors
- Washed and refitted for the lifetime of the machine, with two years of warranty
Two mistakes, two different endings
A restriction is a state. It can be measured, it shows itself at the top of the rev range on a good day, and it is reversed with an air line or with a different element. Abrasive that has passed the medium is a history instead. Nobody can point at it afterwards, no service record contains it, and no later choice of filter takes it back. That asymmetry is why the finer end of the range deserves the benefit of the doubt when conditions are uncertain, even though the two elements look on paper like a straight swap of one property for another.
What the fine end really costs
Not nothing. Giving up close to two thirds of the rated flow figure is a genuine concession, and it is the concession this medium exists to make. It should be made for a reason — unsurfaced roads, dry dust, gravel, a route that spends its life behind other traffic — rather than as a reflex. What it is not, in either direction, is a performance decision: a drop-in element does not make a production motorcycle noticeably faster, and the claim worth defending is the modest one, a lower and steadier intake restriction across the service intervals with a part that is cleaned instead of thrown away.
Care and cleaning
An air line is the whole toolkit for a normal clean: apply it to the clean face and work outward until the fabric runs clear. Oily contamination needs lukewarm water and a mild detergent instead, with rinsing continued until the water comes off clean. Drying is done by ambient moving air alone, with no heat gun, radiator or flame involved at any stage, and the SM276P14 goes back into the case dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is filed under Downloads on this page.
