The usual argument against a finer medium is flow. On the NT1100 the more honest one is time. Honda feeds this engine through two airboxes, so it runs two elements, and a 14 µm nonwoven holds more than a standard weave and therefore reaches its cleaning point sooner. Put those together and the P14 does not cost this owner much air — a touring twin rarely asks for the reserve it gives up — but it does ask for the airbox routine more often, and here that routine is two jobs each time. The cost that is paid in evenings

A finer mat is a shorter interval between inspections, and an inspection on this machine means opening both sides, checking both elements, and putting both back with their seals seated. None of that is difficult and none of it needs parts, but it does need the bike to be still, and it recurs. Riders who cover distance in blocks want the intake settled before a trip rather than during it: service the pair before departure, not at a fuel stop with luggage on the seat.

When the finer cloth is the right one anyway

Plenty of touring is not clean. Gravel car parks and access roads, roadworks that run for a whole summer, the powder behind agricultural traffic on a secondary road, the fine grit lifted from carriageway edges months after it was spread: that is air with a small particle size, and it is exactly what the P14 is specified against. Where a bike sees that regularly the trade is worth making, because the flow given up — 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard PM204S at 80 µm — is reserve a long-stroke touring twin does not call on. Where the roads are mostly clean, the standard weave is the better answer. No element makes a standard NT1100 stronger; both cloths are specified for different air.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean side, pushed outward, is the routine, and it should be done to both elements at once so the pair stays in step. When air is not enough, wash PM204P14 in warm water with a mild dish soap and rinse until clear. Dry in still air only: no hairdryer, no exhaust, no flame.
