A 90-degree V4 does not draw breath in an even rhythm. Four cylinders feed through four separate inlet tracts, and their intake events are not spaced the tidy way an inline four's are — what arrives at the airbox of the VFR800X Crossrunner is a run of offset pulls rather than one smooth stream. The chamber exists to settle that down, and the element across its mouth is the last surface every one of those pulls has to cross. Sprint Filter's P08 changes what that surface is made of: a dry woven polyester panel that gets cleaned on a bench instead of ordered from a counter.
Key Features
- One layer of woven polyester, run entirely dry — no oil goes onto it at any stage, so there is nothing that can travel downstream
- 80 µm filtration at a flow figure of 5,050 l/m²/sec, the medium Sprint Filter treats as its road and track default
- The polyester thread itself starts at ø 22 microns; the openings come from how the cloth is woven, not from pressed pulp
- Close to twice the amount of cloth standing in the airstream that a conventional performance element offers
- Cut to the shape of the Crossrunner's own panel, so the ducting, the chamber volume and Honda's fuelling stay as they were
- Kept in service by cleaning rather than by buying, with two years of cover from the day of purchase
Four tracts, one chamber
Because the pulls are offset, the load on the filtering face is never constant. It peaks four times in every two turns of the crank, and each peak draws hardest through whichever part of the cloth sits nearest the tract that has just opened.
An airbox you do not open casually
Reaching the element on this V4 is not a two-minute job. The tank has to come up, there is bodywork and fuel plumbing to respect on the way, and nobody does it on a whim. That access cost changes what a good element is worth. On a naked bike with the airbox under a single side panel, a cheap paper filter is barely an inconvenience. None of it makes the Crossrunner quicker — that is settled by cams, exhaust and type approval, not by the airbox.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does most of the work. Aim the line at the clean face of the PM112S and push the dirt back out the way it came in, then hold the panel up to a light and check that the cloth has gone evenly translucent again. After a wet winter, or when the airbox has taken in road grit, wash it by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild washing-up liquid and rinse until the water runs clear. Then let it dry in moving air at its own pace — no hairdryer, no radiator, no flame anywhere near it, because polyester and heat do not get on. It goes back in dry and bare, with nothing sprayed on. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the airbox of the Honda VFR800X Crossrunner as built from 2011 to 2019. The same element serves three machines in all: the Crossrunner, the VFR800 of 1998 to 2001 and the VFR800 V-TEC of 2002 to 2019 — the crossover and the sports tourers it was drawn from share the housing. All three are named in the Fitment tab.
