Two kits are listed for this machine in the same carbon fibre frame, and the difference between them is easier to judge as a difference between two kinds of condition. The racing weave pays only in a condition you schedule: a throttle held wide open, on a circuit, for minutes rather than seconds. The water-repellent grade in the R61S-WP-SBK pays in a condition that simply arrives, usually on the way home, and never at a time of the rider's choosing. Which of those describes more of the year on a Monster 1200 R is a question only its owner can answer.

Conditions you plan against conditions that find you

Specification is usually discussed as though a motorcycle spent its life at one operating point. It does not. A large naked twin is used in traffic, on motorways, at night and in the wet, and only occasionally in the state where an open weave earns anything. A medium chosen for the weather is chosen for the majority of the hours, which is a duller argument than the racing one and a considerably more common situation.

What 37 microns actually buys

A finer aperture holds back more and passes less: 4,500 litres per square metre per second here against the standard element's 5,050 at 80 microns. That is a modest step down in flow for a substantial step up in retention, and it is a trade rather than a ranking. Sprint Filter's published 91.8 per cent for this grade comes from a test using 37 micron particles and cannot be set against figures measured with 100 micron ones. And none of it is a power claim: an element in an unaltered airbox does not make a standard Monster faster in any weather.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side outwards is the normal service and takes a few minutes. When a winter of salt and spray has left a film, lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent removes it; rinse until the water is clear. The element then dries fully in moving air — heat guns, radiators and flames all finish polyester off — and is refitted dry, with nothing sprayed onto the cloth.
